Text size and colours
How to use the text size and colour settings in Crystal Cavern, and which setting suits which person and situation.
In Crystal Cavern you can choose the text size and the colour scheme yourself. This page shows where the settings are and gives a rough guide to which one to pick when.
Where the settings are
Open the Menu tab in the game to find Text size and Background and colours. Pressing a button changes the screen straight away. Your choice is saved automatically, so it is still there next time.
These are set inside the game, separately from the text size setting on your iPhone.
Text size (four steps)
There are four steps: Small, Normal, Large and Largest. Not only the body text but the crystal count, the buttons, and even the numbers like "+100" that float up when you tap all grow together.
| Size | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Small | When you want to see many buildings at once |
| Normal | Start here. If unsure, keep it |
| Large | When you hold the phone a little further away, or small text is hard to see |
| Largest | When reading is a strain. Checked so that nothing spills off the screen, even on a narrow iPhone |
Background and colours (five schemes)
There are five colour schemes. The first three are for atmosphere; the last two are high-contrast schemes with the contrast turned all the way up. In every scheme, the difference in brightness between text and background has been measured and adjusted so text never fades into the background.

As a rough guide:
- At night or in a dark room: Cave, Deep sea, Dusk, or High contrast (dark). These are less glaring
- Outdoors or somewhere bright: High contrast (light). Text stays readable even in sunlight
- When text seems to melt into the background: High contrast (dark) or (light). These have the biggest difference between text and background
If you find colours hard to tell apart
The game is built so that nothing important is shown by colour alone. Buildings you can afford have a "▸" before the price. In ×1, ×10 and ×MAX, the chosen one is marked in bold with a thick underline. Whatever scheme you pick, there is always a mark besides colour.
If you want less motion
Turn on Reduce Motion on your iPhone (Settings → Accessibility → Motion) and the bonus orb crosses in a straight line instead of bobbing, and the crystal swells less when tapped. There is nothing to set inside the game.
What I use myself
I play with the text on Normal and the colours on Deep sea. There is no special reason. I just looked at it and thought, "I like this one".
There is no right answer for readability. If unsure, start with Normal and Cave, and change the size or colours if something feels hard to read. Playing in colours you like is what matters most.
